WEBSTER: Passed away February 6, 2016 Lorene taught kindergarten and music in Nebraska, married the late Leland W. Flora in 1941, and moved to upstate, N.Y. following the war, where Leland headed the music department at Sampson College and later Hobart College, while Lorene received her B.A. with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at William Smith College. That year she was named “Mother of the Year” and her picture along with her children, appeared on front pages of national newspapers. In 1955 the couple purchased the Webster-Ontario-Walworth Pennysaver and made it a great success with their dynamic team work and loyal employees. Lee sold ads, while Lorene ran the business end and made pasteups on their dining table at 164 East Main, Webster. Lorene’s Dad, Steve Brazda, mimeographed the Pennysaver in the basement, while mom Rose baked goodies for the workers. They cherished their employees, especially their office managers Pat Evans and Janet Turner, and sales manager Laurie Zahn-Herman. Upon the Floras’ retirement, their daughter Jill and husband Geof stepped in to run the business until 2011 when they also retired. Lorene enjoyed playing her grand piano and often told people that her mother (who played piano for the silent movies) traded her homemade pies for Lorene’s piano lessons. Her greatest joy was the arrival of their daughter, Linda, in 1963. With Jill and Terry off to college, this was a whole new beginning! At age 70, Lorene resumed her artistic painting, giving most of her masterpieces to family members. Services will be held Saturday, May 21st, 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 1460 Ridge Road in Webster – Celebrate Lorene’s life.
