The Wayne County Board of Supervisors strayed from the normal routine this month. Following the regular session of their monthly board meeting at the county courthouse in Lyons on Tuesday, the board took a recess and reconvened at the newly-completed Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES Conference Center in Newark to discuss the Opportunity Analysis Study.

The Opportunity Analysis Study, which was recently completed, is a study that was done by Investment Consulting Associates and Conway Marketing to look into the strengths and weaknesses of the county in a number of economic and tourism-related aspects.

Palmyra Town Supervisor Ken Miller said that purpose was to look for opportunities to promote Wayne County for people to live in and work in. He said it was a countywide effort and not an east versus west deal.

One of the biggest strengths of the county, according to the study, is crop production. To highlight this the marketing firm created a Wayne County logo that incorporates a minimalistic apple and the phrase “At the core of opportunity.” The committee that oversaw the study hopes that the logo will become universally adopted among all schools and official public communications.

As part of the strategic plan on how to improve the county, the report highlighted a number of actions that are highly urgent. They include establishing local business advocacy and communication channels, enhancing local workforce readiness and identifying key growth or redevelopment areas of infrastructure.

Before the board can move forward with the plan, they need an official resolution to do so, which is likely to be done at the meeting in August.

Prior to the recess, the board quickly went through the regular agenda and resolutions with little discussion. They issued a proclamation recognizing the first week in August as World Breastfeeding Week.

There was a public hearing held at 9:30 a.m. to allow public feedback on the creation of a specialized team under the Supervisor of Wayne County EMS Coordinator and Emergency Management Office.

The next Wayne County Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on August 15, at 11 a.m. That meeting will be held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds
