The holiday season is upon us. In Times language that means a disruptive news gathering time. Basically, many government, event and school schedules are on hiatus, or scrambled. Thus, we get to take a little break. For several weeks, the Times will be on our holiday schedule as well. Instead of the usual six sections of 36 to 40+ pages, the paper will be in TWO sections (A&B) with fewer pages. Law & Order, Sports, Meetings etc, will ALL be in these two sections.

Several of our regular features such as 1 ON 1, Science, etc. will be on hold as we recharge our batteries for 2017.

Next week, watch for our annual “Babies in Review”, so if you have not submitted babies born in 2016 by now you have until the cut-off on Tuesday 12/20 before 5pm

We will return to our normal schedule after the holidays.

Long time writers Cynthia Kukuvka (Legal Briefs) is retiring from her law business to become the newly elected County Judge Rick Healy’s law clerk.

Chuck Wells, likewise, is getting older and crustier and will be hanging up his righteous column to pursue other interests. (Getting really old, not so graciously)

Both Cynthia and Chuck have been faithful additions for decades and will be missed. We are in the process of finding new columnists beginning with the new year.

Just a reminder. If you have a gripe about something in the Times, don’t ask for the Editor and begin screaming and threatening. I know this guy and if you are not civil, he will listen for a brief moment, then go and tell you to have relations with yourself, in not such a polite manner. Calling back and continuing to scream gets the same response.

If you have a concern, voice it normally without the threats, etc. And, no, I don’t care what publishing your son’s arrest and subsequent mug shot will do to his grandma’s heart condition. That should have been HIS concern.

NOTE TO JUDGES, PUBLIC DEFENDER, DISTRICT ATTORNEY
Yes, bail is placed on an individual to ensure his/her return to the next court date. No, bail is not a form of punishment… but…
If a wanted person avoids being caught, is a danger to police, or the public, please put adequate bail on the individual to ensure their return to court. Remember that a bail bondsman often only requires 10% of a bond to get a person out of jail. Example: A $5000 bond requires only $500 to set the bird free. If a person is facing hard jail/prison time, $500 is a path to freedom and another chase begins. There is a reason the State Police call it the Violent Felony Squad that chases down law absconders.
Think about the cops who have to put their lives on the line because bail was inadequate in the first place.
(See story on page C1)

Have very Happy Holidays, as we all look forward to 2017
