ROCHESTER: March 8, 2017 at age 86. Retired longtime Rochester City School District and Rochester-area Catholic Schools (1952–1972) teacher, died peacefully at St. John’s Home, in Rochester, where she had resided since 2014. Rood (Sister Carmelita) retired, in 1990, from the City School District, where she instructed first grade at Enrico Fermi School No. 17 for nearly 20 years. Prior to that she taught at St. Patrick’s in Elmira (1952–1954), St. John’s in Clyde (1954–1957), St. Cecilia’s in Rochester (1957–1961), Holy Cross School in Rochester (1961–1964), St. Andrew in Rochester (1964–1968), Holy Family in Auburn (1968–1970) and St. Charles Borromeo in Greece (1970-1971). She also served at St. Rita in Webster and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Rochester. “I pretty much was with ‘the babies,’” she said, in 2013, looking back at her long teaching career and devotion to young children. “I belonged with them. They were so sweet.” A 1948 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School, Rood entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1949 and took her vows, as Sister Mary Carmelita, R.S.M., in 1955. She was a 1955 graduate of Catherine McAuley Junior College, in Rochester, and earned bachelor’s and master’s (1976) degrees in education from Nazareth College of Rochester. Prior to moving to St. John’s Home, Rood had resided in Brighton, East Rochester, Fairport, Henrietta and Fort Pierce, Fla.
Friends may call 3–6 p.m. March 17 at Anthony Funeral Chapel, 2305 Monroe Ave., Brighton. A Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. March 18 at St. Thomas More Church, 2617 East Ave., Brighton.
