Retired Veteran honors hundreds of local hundreds of veterans with a photo project display in Lyons

A special observance of Memorial Day can be seen at the Lyons VFW this weekend. Two eight foot Christmas trees are decorated with hundreds of photos and info on local Lyons Veterans who served and lost their lives. Each is decorated with a poppy.

The incredible display was the brainchild of Lyons VFW member, retired Sergeant Major Judy Harford, who currently lives in Florida.

Here is the story of her project.

This “Memorial Day Tree” is an off- shoot of a much larger project.  When I retired from the Army in 2007, I wanted some way to honor my father, Roy Husner, who was a WW II USMC Corporal (he died in 2000). He was a charter member of the Lyons VFW Post 5092 and before his death he sponsored me – while I was stationed in Korea.  Mom (Bessie Lee Husner) who is a Charter Member of the Auxiliary, let me borrow her scrap books – bless her – she is of the old school who placed names on all photos.

I took the original charter listing and charter photo and began a genealogy of the 182 charter members. Attempting to find birth and death dates was a challenge, which then led me to the Lyons Cemeteries – where I took photos of all military headstones.

My intention was to stay with charter members, but was expanded to Lyons Veterans. This led me to over 800 going back to the Revolutionary War.  The Lyons Library gave me some info, but not enough, so the next step was the Wayne County Historian’s Office, where I met Jane Milem the Administration Officer who took my listing to 5,000 – now I was researching all of Wayne County. She was an enormous help.  My next step was attempting to find obituaries. I also extended my search to anyone in Wayne County who served and was currently serving.  Now I had to visit other cemeteries in the county. At this point I have only covered about 10 of the larger ones. I am now at over 11,000 Veterans who have served in Wayne County since the revolutionary war. (I have yet to compare all Civil War Veterans as listed in a book by Lewis H Clark titled Military History of Wayne County, NY which was printed around 1880).  His work includes information on Veterans who served in the Revolutionary War, The War of 1812 & the Civil War.  His included some information on where some Veterans were buried, but not all.  I decided to research where these Veterans are buried.

The NY Honor Guard, out of Lyons (which I am a participating member when in town), provided me with photos of Veterans – about 75.  The Lyons VFW provided me with 43 photos that they had placed on their walls. The Clyde VFW (Fred Carr Commander) provided over 600 photos of Veterans.  Mom’s scrapbooks had over 100 photos.  It is taking me some time, but I am cleaning up the photos (removing scratches and age) and still receiving photos.

All of this led my business partner and I, while doing the “Wreaths Across America”, to brainstorm about what to do with all of my photos in honor of those Veterans who served honorably. He came up with the idea of a “Memorial Day Tree”. If I had a photo of a veterans, we cleaned it up a bit and printed it. Next was cross referencing Veterans who had been members of the Lyons VFW and printing their headstone if we had it. Last, was the list of Veterans with no photo or headstone, but whom we also wanted to honor. We included them with photos from the past. We purchased plastic sleeves and obtained poppies (sold to remember Veterans) and placed the printed photos in them using the poppies as the hanger.

I am still a member of the Lyons VFW Post 5092.  I am not there enough to help with many of their Veterans Support projects, so the Memorial Day Tree is my way of saying THANK YOU.

I graduated from Clyde-Savannah High School in 1975. Upon graduation enlisting in the Army Reserve 98th Tng Div which was at the time located in East Palmyra. I finally obtained by Bachelors in 2003.

I entered the Active Guard and Reserve Program in 1980, where I served until Jun 2007 – with a total of 32 years 10 months of active service.  My last duty assignment was Senior Enlisted Advisor (SEA) for Reserve Components (all 7) at US Central Command, Tampa Florida, retiring as a Sergeant Major.  I have visited Reserve troops in 14 countries finding out their problems and assisting with solving them for the Commander of US Central Command and The Secretary of Reserve Affairs in Washington DC.

My parents are Bessie Lee Husner and Roy Earl Husner (deceased).  I grew up in Lock Berlin.

I come from a strong military family.  Dad was a Marine in WW II, oldest brother John served in the Air Force in Vietnam (now lives in Aurora, CO), middle brother Sam served in the USN as a Corpsman in the Global War on Terrorism serving in Djbouti, Africa (now lives in Fairville, NY) – supporting the same Marine Division that dad had served in WW II.  Myself in the USA. All members of Lyons VFW Post 5092.

I have two step-sons: David on who retires from the USA in Oct 2018 – COL, USA, MD (Pediatric Hemoc/Oncologist), in San Antonio TX and Paul who is Personal Property Assessor for Chaffee County, Colorado.  4 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.

As a side note, Dad and 4 of his brothers all served in WW II.

My husband is Bob Harford, who also retired as a SGM from the USA.
