Conrad is pre-deceased by his grandfather, Gerald Button.  He is survived by his uncle, Bernard Button; sisters, Aimee (Kenny) Miller, Stephanie (Lee) Oldfield; nieces and nephews, Kendall, Mason, Isaac and Lena; father, William Button and mother, Joan Dutcher; grandmother, June Leibring; aunts and uncles, Carol Ann (Mike) Gratton, Steven (Kathy) Button, Jimmy (Karen) Button, Fred (Helen) Button, Janet Dutcher, Judi Dutcher and many cousins. Walworth resident’s wine label chosen at FLCC

The label chosen for the wine that Finger Lakes Community College students will bottle next spring pays homage to where it all began.

Second-year graphic design major Rachel Graf of Walworth designed the label and name for the college’s 2019 vintage wines. To be called “Foundation,” the wine label features antiqued blueprints of the college’s Viticulture and Wine Center, which opened in Geneva in early 2015.

The name and design symbolize the center’s opening and its role as a starting point – or foundation – for students enrolled in the program.

“I wanted to showcase the hard work of the viticulture students and pay homage to their studies and the center itself for creating these amazing opportunities for them,” said Graf, a 2018 graduate of Wayne Central High School in Ontario, Wayne County. “The blueprints represent the literal foundation for the center itself, and the center represents the educational foundation for the students.”

Graf and her classmates designed labels for a graphic design course taught by Liz Brownell of Victor, professor of graphic design. In what has become an annual tradition, the labels were revealed recently at a gallery-style reception at the Viticulture and Wine Center. The 14 student designers took turns pitching their concepts, touching on themes, color palettes, font choices, as well as what types of computer programs were used to create the designs.

“This project is a chance for the students to have the experience of working with actual clients,” said Brownell. “It’s a boots on the ground approach. In any discipline of study, the teacher can describe what it’s like to work in the field, but when students have the actual experience for themselves it’s a different level of learning.”

Students of Paul Brock, associate professor of viticulture, voted on the labels. Selecting a winner proved challenging. In fact, a tie-breaker vote was required. The runner up, Adele Fishbaugh of Dundee, paid homage to Native Americans with her minimalist design, titled Nilch’itsoh.

Students Lex Nicotina of Greece and Quinn Howell of Palmyra were also finalists in the contest.

Niagara Label of Akron is donating its services to make the labels and Waterloo Container is donating the bottles.

For more information on the FLCC viticulture and wine technology degree or the graphic design degree, visit flcc.edu or call (585) 785-1000.

County Motor Vehicle Dept. customers’ personal documents ends up in landfill

Last Thursday (12/12), it was brought to Wayne County Clerk, Mike  Jankowski’s attention that there was a problem at the Wayne County Department of Motor Vehicles.

During the overnight, it appeared that the cleaning staff had thrown away a box of sales tax applications that were to be mailed to Albany the next day. Specifically, 239 people who paid sales tax in the month of November 2019 are affected.

These forms contained personal identifiable information. “I feel it is my obligation to inform the public of this failure and notify individuals who were potentially affected by this unsafe disposal of documents. These forms were in a locked and secure area of the Department of Motor Vehicles and someone mistakenly thought they were trash and sent them to the landfill,” admitted Jankowski

The incident has been referred to the State Department of Motor Vehicles for a complete investigation. “I have directed my Office and staff to give the State Agents their complete cooperation. I am looking forward to finding the full details of what happened and will be working diligently to correct any and all actions that led to this event happening. I would like to apologize for this inconvenience and failure in the correct handling of these documents. You can be assured that I will work to make sure such a mistake is not able to happen in the future,” added the County Clerk.

On Thursday afternoon letters were sent out to each of the 239 affected individuals. If anyone has any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact the County Clerk at (315) 946-5986 or email mjankowski@co.wayne.ny.us.

Man involved in DWI death held on half-million dollar bail

The undocumented immigrant who allegedly drove drunk and killed a Weedsport man in November was back in court on Wednesday, December 18.

Heriberto Perez-Velasquez appeared in order to have his bail status reviewed by the Honorable Thomas G. Leone, pursuant to the Bail Elimination Act.  Courts across New York within the next two weeks are required to bring in every defendant being held on bail in order to review their status after the first of the year, based upon the new laws.  The Courts will be required to Order the Release of all those whose charges are on the list of charges for which they cannot be held pending the posting of bail as of January 1st, 2020. These new laws are already leading to the release of hundreds of potentially dangerous defendants across New York State.

Investigators said his blood alcohol content was more than double the legal limit when he killed Mark Knapp.

Heriberto Perez-Velasquez is now being held on a half-a-million-dollars bail.

Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom, but inside, Perez-Velasquez was wearing headphones that a translator spoke into.

Mark Knapp’s family filled one side of the room, as the judge decided it was best to set bail high enough to keep him in jail and avoid the chance of him making bail, then being detained by ICE.

When Perez-Velasquez left the room, he locked eyes with one of his friends, who said it’s a relief that he has to stay in jail.

“He’s where he needs to be, I feel because he’s away from the bad situation but he’s where he needs to be,” said Robyn Meade, Perez-Velasquez’ friend.

Meade admitted he has an alcohol problem. “I’m actually relieved. I’m glad they did it that high because I don’t think he should be out. He should be right where he is,” Meade said.

When asked if she thinks Perez-Velasquez is a danger to himself and others, she responded, “Yes, yes I actually do because if he’s out I think he’d be drinking again. I really do.”

Mark Knapp’s family declined to speak.

Perez-Velasquez’s girlfriend said she’s also glad he will remain in the county, close to his two-month-old daughter Isabella Grace.

Cayuga County District Attorney, Jon E. Budelmann held a press conference to discuss how the bail elimination act impacts this case, and the impact of the bail elimination act in general and the dangers that our communities face if the Governor and the State Legislature do not take action to delay or modify these “reforms” which they set in motion to take effect January 1, 2020.

Budelmann pointed out what a terrible example of the danger the public faces due to the implementation of the Bail Elimination Act is concerning the homicide of Mark Knapp.

Heriberto Perez-Velasquez has been charged with causing that death in a 0.21% BAC Drunk Driving Crash on November 10, 2019 in the Village of Weedsport.

Just three weeks earlier, the defendant had been charged with Aggravated DWI (0.22% BAC) and Resisting Arrest in Wayne County. Budelmann pointed out their (Wayne County) Centralized Arraignment Part (CAP) had already implemented policies and procedures in conformity with these new reckless (“reforms”) laws. This resulted in the release of this defendant that same morning on just an appearance ticket. Portions of this story courtesy of news partner 13WHAM

Macedon Supervisor-Elect Paul Kenyon dies

$

It was learned on Thursday morning, that newly elected Supervisor for the Town of Macedon, Paul Kenyon had died, following a yearlong battle with cancer.

Kenyon, who has been on the Town Board in Macedon for 25 years, also served as Deputy Supervisor for the last 4 years under Supervisor Sandy Pagano, and for a number of  years as Deputy Supervisor for his good friend former Supervisor Bill Hammond.

Pagano, announced her retirement last year from the position which she has held for 4 years. As her term ends December 31, 2019, Pagano is in the position of calling the Town Board together before the end of the year, to fill the vacancy before January 1, 2020. An appointment would last until the General Election in November. At that time, a vote will be held for the three-year vacancy.

Kenyon, often a strong spokesperson for the Macedon Town Board, also served the community through his board position on the Palmyra-Macedon School board.

According to the Pal-Mac School district, Paul served on the Board of Education from 1990-1999 and  served as Pal-Mac’s Director of Human Resources from 1999-2013

Pal-Mac BOE President Sharon Lang had this to say about Kenyon: “On behalf of the Pal-Mac Board of Education, members past and present, I offer my condolences to Paul’s family. His many years of service to the Board, our district, and entire community demonstrate his love for Pal-Mac; for this we are all truly thankful.”

School District Superintendent Robert Ike added: “I am sad for the loss of my friend and colleague. Paul was a true gentleman. His devotion to his family, faith, and community was an attribute I always admired. I am thankful for having known Paul, for working alongside him in his role as Director of Human Resources, and for his continued friendship. The hearts of the Pal-Mac community are extended to Paul’s entire family at this difficult time.”

Besides the void to be filled at the Town level, the County Board of Supervisors will also take a hit.

“We need representation from all our towns on the County level. This is an issue which will be left to the Town of Macedon to pursue, and we will give our best efforts to welcoming an appointee. For continuity, if the seat were filled for the time being by the current Supervisor, that would make the transition smooth and seamless, but this is not our decision to make. We have enjoyed working with Supervisor Pagano, and were anxious to meet and welcome Mr. Kenyon. Our thoughts are with his family at this time,” said Sodus Supervisor/Chairman of Board of Supervisors Steve LeRoy.

The State Board of Elections has indicated to the Wayne County BOE that the vacancy left by the death of Mr. Kenyon shall be filled as with any vacancy in the Town. A board appointment shall be made and the Clerk will need to certify the contest to fill the remaining term at the 2020 general election.

Wayne County Republican Chair MaryAnne Nicosia-McCarthy noted, with sadness, “On behalf of the Wayne County Republican Committee, I wish to express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the Kenyon family during this time of grief and pray that Paul’s soul is a peace.”

On hearing the news of Kenyon’s death, Supervisor Pagano stated: “Our hearts are with Mr. Kenyon’s family. He was a passionate servant to the town for over 25 years. He was dedicated and cared so much for the community, as a longtime resident and board member.”

“The Macedon Town leadership will discuss further steps concerning the vacancy during their special meeting on Monday, December 23rd, 2019. Right now we are focused with our hearts and prayers for the family. Your town will continue to operate,” Pagano assured Macedon residents.

According to State Board of Election law, Pagano would remain seated as a Town Supervisor and member of the County Board of Supervisors until someone is appointed to serve until November. She would retain voting rights on both boards

How things are Changing

$

0

After a year of Albany bullshit, things will be changing a bit in the Law & Order section of this paper.

It is already more difficult to get mug shots, due to our very stupid governor and legislature and it will most assuredly result in changes to the overall police agency reporting.

Over the next several weeks immediate arrests will be way down. Police agencies and officers are finding out the new Cuomo effect requires additional paperwork and concerns making arrests. Even traffic stops will be affected as officers must take additional steps before even writing a ticket.

You have seen over the past months that Cuomo’s plan to almost completely empty prisons and jails will curtail and eliminate such things as bail and detention.

Now, arrests must pass the Cuomo smell test before a defendant is arrested. The Wayne County District Attorney’s Office has already geared up, as best they can, to handle the influx of cases.

Arrests, will in some cases, be delayed due to extra paperwork, evidence and processing.

This will result in many cases of delayed reporting until the system catches up. Eventually, readers will see most mug shots and arrest information after all the hoops are jumped.

The Times will continue publishing  arrests and we will do our utmost at reporting police and court actions. Please be patient in the change over.

As you have read and heard, the vast majority of arrests require no bail, or incarceration, including most, if not all major felonies. This will enable everything from pedophiles, drug dealers, domestic abusers and even some murderers to continue their trades unabated by bail, or incarceration.

Changes are coming that we may not agree totally with, but I have the feeling people (voters) will wake up to the reality of this social change. Lets’ hope so.

*****

69-40

On January 2nd, I will turn 69 years old. I still have no plans to retire, and a system to continue the Times is being put in place.

Now on to the number 40.

This past Friday (12/20) I had my (gulp) fortieth (40) operation. No, I am not trying to go for any record, but reality and modern medicine is attempting to preserve livability and motion.

I now have enough titanium in my body to build a stealth bomber. It is always fun when I go through a body scanner at the airport and have to be pulled out of line by often grumpy airport security and ‘wanded’.

Yes, it is my fault that nature and medicine has picked me for this dubious honor.

Besides the 40 body incisions, I have had kidney stone attacks, been told I have some dormant gall stones, had pneumonia several times, fought and won the bladder cancer thing (so far), have terrible bouts of gout and flare ups of hemorrhoids. No, I do not pick up anything heavy due to my bad back and have had cortisone shots in every part of this bod, including occasional neck needles. I can honestly say the worse place I have had cortisone injections is between the fingers.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is the main culprit in my slow decline and I am perhaps lucky that at this stage it is not worse. I have, however, paid out of pocket costs as much as $2800 per month for several failed treatments.

I was an early Prozac contributor and have been on some sort of related medication for most of my adult life.

I take a handful of pills on a daily basis that are closely (?) monitored by Wife Patti. Yes, occasionally she screws up and I am left in a daze, but she always counters with an “Oops”. No, I insist there is NO– DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) paper work, once I found out about the large insurance policy.

One thing I insist and follow through on is getting the newspaper deadline met. Be assured, even after surgeries, including this past Friday’s entanglement, I always return to the office, albeit a bit groggy and get the job done.

Son and business partner, Devin and his wife Christy, have plans to take the helm of the Times some day, if it should become necessary.

I know this sounds like a pity party for my health, but I realize there are people in much worse situations. I am at the timeof my life where seeing the grandkids is a boast to my day, along with the touch and words of Wife Patti.
